Fall of Saigon Exhibition update 28/03/05
Monday, March 28th, 2005Tin’s last day up here, we got up pretty early today and went to Bunnings to get paint and wallpaper glue. We managed to finish Tin’s panels before meeting up with Haline for lunch again in Cabramatta and then making a mad dash to the airport for a 4pm flight.
I came back to finish the background elements to my panels. One of the things about the Powerhouse is that its a scary place if you’re alone in there, your mind plays tricks on you, especially if you have an active imagination. I was constantly thinking of severed heads floating by, gremlins coming out of the toilet, blood rising out of the sinks, spirits floating by behind me and eyes watching me through the windows. I ended up leaving there around 9pm, locking up and walking to my car was a bit tense, the full moon just added to the scariness.
We got a lot done this long weekend, will be back to work some more this week, maybe not at night. Its definitley a great space to work in.
Fall of Saigon Exhibition update 27/03/05
Sunday, March 27th, 2005The Powerhouse’s Artist in Residence accomodation is very nice, the bed is so comfy, we slept in till 11am. The view from our bedroom window is of Autumn leaves dappled in late morning sunlight, inspiring. The kitchen has been intentionally influenced by a Pete Mondrian (or Plet Mondriaan if you’re Dutch) painting. More painting, cutting, collaging and assembling today. The Powerhouse would be a great place to hold a rave party, Underworld and BT sounds great really loud in there.
Fall of Saigon Exhibition update 26/03/05
Saturday, March 26th, 2005Picked Tin up from the airport in the morning, took him back to the Powerhouse and showed him around. We got down to work on the backdrop panels, more painting and organising where everything should go. Haline joined us for a while. The atmosphere in the Powerhouse is great when there’s people working, everything echoes and the music vibrates around the high ceilings and walls.

Powerhouse
Thursday, March 24th, 2005
Tin, Haline and I will have the Casula Powerhouse to ourselves over the long weekend to work on our artwork for the exhibition. They have rooms for the artists in residence so we’ll be sleeping there too. Such a cool place to work.

Mac OS X start up time reduced
Tuesday, March 22nd, 2005If you’re using Mac OS X 10.3, this is gold, Daring Fireballs start up speed boost find.
I tried his suggestion of deleting the “fontTablesAnnex” cache. - /System/Library/Caches/fontTablesAnnex
Mine was a bloated 155 megs.
Start up time went from 58 seconds to 45, hey, 13 seconds saved, is 13 seconds I could waste reading other people’s blogs!
iPod battery
Tuesday, March 22nd, 2005Out of curiosity and procrastination, I decided to test how long my 3rd Generation 40Gig iPod’s battery would last on a full charge yesterday. Playing the entire playlist on random with skipping every now and then for an audio book or a song that can now be listed as “I can’t believe I have ‘that’ in there”, it managed to play for 5 hours straight before shutting off.
According to this viral video from iPods dirty secret, the iPods battery last for 18 months, so I quickly find the receipt of when I got the iPod and as things turn out, its exactly to the date today 18 months ago that I got the thing.
Note: The iPod in the video is a 1st Generation iPod.
I can remember the batteries lasting for about 8/9 hours approx when it was new, less if the backlight was always turning on from navigating songs or using the menus. I think the reason why its still going pretty good is that I’ve been using it connected to the dock attached to the power source for half of those 18 months.
I wish they would integrate a radio tuner into the iPod. I once loaded an entire book into my iPod and read it all via its Notes tool, bloody hard on the eyes. Who wants to view photos on an iPod, the quality can’t be that great, give me a radio tuner!
John Maeda is talking about iPods this week.
