Waiting for the printer reading.

Australians (me included) turning to Bit Torrent for Lost episodes, seen up to Ep 19. I’d hate to have a 1 Terabyte hard drive die on me if it was mostly full. Oh dear, WordPress pulling a sly one on its supporters.

A Space Odyssey

Wednesday, April 6th, 2005

A nice interpretation of what Kubrick might have been on about with this movie.
I’m glad its on SBS, no commercials.

2001: A Space Odyssey

10pm - 12.30am ; SBS

Sci-Fi (1968) (UK/English)
Director: Stanley Kubrick

Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece tracing an expedition to the moon, Jupiter and beyond, and imagining the future evolution of humanity. A group of ape-like creatures - primitive humans - discover the use of bones as weapons in a quarrel over a waterhole. Jump forward thousands of years and an American expedition finds a mysterious black monolith - an obvious alien artefact - on the Moon. Another expedition is sent to Jupiter where a second monolith has been discovered. During the journey the ship’s computer, HAL 9000, develops paranoia and kills all the crew members but the captain, Dave Bowman.

War of the Worlds and Alien Invaders

Tuesday, April 5th, 2005

I hope Tom Cruise doesn’t wreck War of the Worlds. I read the book in high school and it was a great story, the ending of how they all die from Earth’s diseases was a bit lame though. Another cool invasion book/movie is “The Day of the Triffids“, V and The Tripods were good television series at the time too.

The Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci

Saturday, April 2nd, 2005

Leonardo Da Vinci’s Notebook in text form. From Project Gutenberg,

./ Random excerpt

THIRD BOOK ON LIGHT AND SHADE.

Definition of derived shadow (158. 159).

158.

Derived shadow cannot exist without primary shadow. This is proved
by the first of this which says: Darkness is the total absence of
light, and shadow is an alleviation of darkness and of light, and it
is more or less dark or light in proportion as the darkness is
modified by the light.

159.

Shadow is diminution of light.

Darkness is absence of light.

Shadow is divided into two kinds, of which the first is called
primary shadow, the second is derived shadow. The primary shadow is
always the basis of the derived shadow.

The edges of the derived shadow are straight lines.
