Haline, Tina and I were 14 metres up in the air for most of weekend painting a big ass rose onto an old Pizza Hut sign post. The old building below is now a shop selling giftwares and the owner wants to have a flower shop in there too. He hired a massive cherry picker with an arm extension of maybe 16 metres. I’m not sure if you need a license to drive one of these things but it was pretty easy to get a handle of. It was fun, like driving a big remote control car with an articulated arm that you can pretty much control and position yourself anywhere 15 metre up.
It was pretty scary at one point too, with the wind picking up slightly from a gentle breeze and the fully extended arm swaying back and forth. Looking down and seeing the arm fully extended and leaning about 45 degrees I wondered how it was holding us up. It was relatively safe though, we were harnessed in and only went up when it was calm.
We finished both sides around midnight on Sunday and the result is amazing, not many motorists will miss this iconic rose as they drive past in either directions of the Hume Highway. Haline designed the image and it suited beautifully with the old signpost shape, complete with leaf petals and stem.
Weirdest part of the weekend was seeing a big cockroach walk across the top of the sign with the lights of Liverpool in the background. Scariest was when the wind picked up, my legs felt like jello. nicest was eating Hungry Jacks suspend 12 metres in the air under the stars.
