Attended my first Semi-Permanent over the weekend. Overall it wasn’t too inspiring, with some of the speakers basically just showing and telling their work while not giving much more insight into their work than “Paris Hilton walking around naked on a photoshoot”. Then again, you’d be nervous too if you had to talk in front of 3000 people. The mix of speakers from different industries was good to see. Beci Opin and ABCK’s use of intro videos was cool.

I liked anyhow, Dumbo Feather, Paul Pope and Josh Davies because they offered more of a story behind the work and how they got to where they are now. Josh Davies has turned into a seasoned speaker at these things, from the first time I saw him at Fresh Hong Kong, still the crowd pleaser and showman that he is. Kate Bezar of Dumbo Feather really touched a chord with her talk about starting up a magazine and how the name came about, passi(t)on.

Some small observations from the talk, referencing old elements and making stuff dynamic seems to be the to-do thing right now. The amount of people wearing stripe shirts/jumpers out weighed people with spikey mohawk hair. Use of comedy really helps to get the crowd into the talk. Getting your hot girlfriend to run the slide show of your talk is a bad idea (if she has no idea how to run it).

I couldn’t believe Patrick’s gf changed into a slinky black dress for the talk (she was dressed in casual gear whilst setting up…) She was abit “dieu” wasn’t she…
